Las Vegas is known as a sparkling symbol of lavish entertainment, fine dining and gambling, but few people realize that Sin City and the surrounding environs are also home to some of the best and most challenging golf courses in the United States. Enjoy flawless weather, striking scenery and excellent play with a Las Vegas golf getaway.
Las Vegas truly came into its own as a resort destination in the 1960s. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra who considered Sin City their homes away from home brought their passion for their favourite pastime with them. It wasn’t long before multitudes of manicured greens began appearing beneath the blue Nevada sky. Today’s Las Vegas holidays include golf excursions for weekend hobbyists and dedicated amateurs alike.
The many resorts in and around Las Vegas make it a golfer’s paradise. A few of our favourites:
Wolf Course at the Paiute Golf Club
One of three Pete Dye-designed courses at the resort, the Wolf Course is perhaps the most challenging and treacherous in the Las Vegas area. At 7,600 yards, it is also currently the longest. Notorious for its slippery greens, the winds blowing down from the rugged mountains adjacent to the course can help or hinder every shot.
TPC Las Vegas
Designers Ray Floyd and Bobby Weed went to great lengths to leave the natural desert terrain undisturbed. This course has been included on the PGA tour and winds through arroyos and canyons that create natural hazards. The back nine leads golfers into the “Death Valley” gorge, a rocky ravine that shadows most of the fairways on the last leg of the course.
Las Vegas National Club
For those who want to enjoy a little golf on their Las Vegas holidays but aren’t quite ready to play with the pros, the National offers old-fashioned golf at its finest. There are no rocky ravines to negotiate or roughs bristling with cacti. Enjoy a fun round of relaxing golf on acres of grass just minutes from the Strip.
Arroyo at Red Rock
The only course at the Red Rock Country Club open to public play, this Arnold Palmer Signature snakes 6,883 yards through the desert landscape. Boasting emerald greens against the striking backdrop of the majestic Red Rock Canyon, this compelling Par 72 course is visually stunning and technically challenging.
Bali Hai
Instead of embracing the natural environment or trying to carve a traditional course from the desert, designers Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley have created a tropical oasis complete with palm trees, tropical flowers and bunkers filled with white sand. This 7,002-yard faux island paradise is as difficult as it is unique. Watch out for the sapphire lagoon guarding No. 11.
With dozens of golf courses dotting the desert landscape, Las Vegas offers golf holidays for players at every level. In addition to unparalleled play, Las Vegas holidays include striking scenery, luxury accommodations, fabulous food and excellent entertainment. Pack your clubs and head to Las Vegas for a golf holiday unlike any other.
